Gol D. Roger ate the Gum-Gum Fruit??!

My girlfriend and I were watched One Piece a couple nights ago; we started the first 3 episodes and it was a blast to watch them again, seeing as I am currently all caught up in the manga. I started thinking, Luffy owns Gol D. Roger's straw-hat, aspires to be "King of the Pirates", and can even use the Hoaushoku Haki, there's no way he could be any more like the previous kind himself.

Or could he.....?

After learning about Ace's Mera Mera no Mi being up for grabs as the first prize in the Dressrosa Colosseum tournament, it wad told that after a fruit user dies, their fruit replants itself to be picked again. Like Ace's Mera Mera no Mi, the Gomu Gomu no Mi could do the same.

Here's my theory:

Shanks, being the first recipient of the Roger's straw-hat, set out to look for the fruit that his captain originally consumed. After finding it, he returned to his hometown, to celebrate and drink with his crewmates (like any captain would). After the bar fight with the bandits, the enraged Luffy eats the fruit. Shanks immediately tells him to spit it out, but it is too late for that; Luffy has become a rubber man. Is Shanks mad only because he ate the fruit, or because he ate Roger's Gomu Gomu no Mi? After saving Luffy, Shanks loses his arm, realizing the Luffy was someone he had to protect. When Luffy declares that he will be "King of the Pirates", and that he wants to go with him, Shanks puts his straw-hat on Luffy's head. I believe Shanks does this because he sees Luffy's potential, having the heightened sense of awareness that he does. Essentially, Shanks sees his former captain in his eyes now due to Luffy eating Gol D. Roger's devil fruit.

This is all speculation of course......but we shall see
